An organized closet can change how you start your day. Whether it’s your primary wardrobe, a hallway coat closet, or a storage space, the SPACE method—Sort, Purge, Assign, Contain, and Equalize—gives you a practical step-by-step guide to reclaim your closet. Here's how to do it:
Step 1: Sort
Take everything out of your closet. Yes—everything! Spread items out on your bed or floor and start grouping them into categories:
Tops
Bottoms
Dresses
Shoes
Accessories
Outerwear
This helps you see how much of each item you have and sets the stage for the next step.
Step 2: Purge
Time to be honest. Go through each category and ask yourself:
Do I wear this?
Do I love this?
Is it in good condition?
Create a pile for donations, one for toss/recycle, and one for anything that needs repairs. Let go of anything that doesn’t serve you anymore.
Step 3: Assign
Now that you're down to what you want to keep, decide where everything should go. Think in zones:
Most used items at eye level
Seasonal or occasional pieces on top shelves or in bins
Shoes at the bottom or in designated cubbies
Plan your closet layout around your daily habits.
Step 4: Contain
Containment helps keep everything neat. Use:
Baskets for scarves or loose accessories
Drawer dividers for undergarments
Clear bins for visibility
Not see-through bins for stuff that might get messy
Matching hangers for a cohesive look
Label everything clearly so you and your family know where it belongs.
Step 5: Equalize
This step is about maintenance. Make it a habit to:
Do a weekly 5-minute tidy-up
Return items to their zones
Reassess seasonally or before shopping sprees
Equalizing ensures your closet stays functional and beautiful.
Final Thoughts
A well-organized closet can reduce morning stress, make you feel more in control, and help you appreciate what you already own. The SPACE framework makes the process clear and repeatable—and best of all, it works in closets of all shapes and sizes.
